How's this for a plot? A screenwriter is typing away frantically, trying to create the screenplay for a movie, a story told on stage in vivid colour. At the same time the plot of the movie itself unfolds in black and white. Welcome to City of Angels, an exceptional musical with numerous awards attached to it and a seriously large fan base who have been patiently waiting for it to be reprised on the West End stage.
City of Angels achieved three Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score, plus two Olivier Awards for Best New Musical and Best Musical Revival. The 2014 Donmar Warehouse revival, like this one directed by the Donmar Warehouse's artistic director Josie Rourke, was nominated for five 2015 Olivier Awards and won several other coveted awards. You'll love this quirky musical comedy, which is also a poignant love letter to old-style Hollywood glamour and film noir. It premiered on Broadway in 1989 and in the West End in 1993, and most of the members of the cast play two roles, one fictional as the screenwriter reveals his story, and the other real life as it tells the story of the screenwriter. Brilliant. This is a genuine landmark production and takes place at the glittering Garrick theatre from early March 2020. Enjoy!
